Last Weekend

My mom and my stepdad live out in the country. And as such, they have certain requirements of anyone who housesits for them, like feeding the chickens each day.

The chickens were remarkably well-behaved while I was up there. They put themselves to bed each night and I didn’t have to run all over the yard trying to pen them up.

In their bedroom, at the foot of the bed draped over an old trunk, lies my inspiration to begin knitting. I really like seeing this every time I go up there, because it is one of the few things in my life that I can associate with a definite turning point. I like to imagine that our lives have truly signifigant moments; but sadly, a lot of my life has been spent aimlessly drifting from scene to scene without much determination.
Well, when I first saw this shawl, I knew that I was going to learn the art behind it. And while I have not yet created anything quite so spectacular, at least now I can look at it and know what it took to create it.

My sister made that shawl with skeins from the rag bag at The Hummingbird, an excellent store in Kerrville which is closing down. I’m sad to see it go, but I am thankful for their closing sale. (That was the source of the twenty skeins of yarn my mom recently obtained for me.)

While the dogs and I were out at the river, Morgan took the opportunity to practice her ninjitsu. Bailey has mastered the art of finding a large piece of furniture to hide under or behind; but Morgan is seeking to master the more subtle art of hiding in plain site. She instinctively seeks out backgrounds that she can blend into:

She was blending so well that I did not have the heart to tell her that leather sofas don’t have cold wet noses in the middle of their cushions. You gotta tuck the nose in, Morgan. How can you lead a ninja strike force when everyone sees your nose stickin’ out?

I thought a cold, wet nose was a sign of a healthy sofa? No?

Either you are a PhotoShop genius, have a nice orange filter, or the dog is a chameleon. TOO FUNNY.

Oh! It must be in the air – thoughts of dogs on the furniture. That’s what I wrote about today too!

I love ninja dogs. Heck. I think I love all dogs.

Aww. :) Morgan is a cutie. And that shawl is beautiful!

Maybe the chickens saw Chicken Run recently? Figured they better behave before they turn into pot pies?? :)
