That Graphing Thing

I was just browsing through the Austin guild’s newsletter, The Filament to see when the next meeting is so I can tell Michelle. (It’s November 22nd, Michelle.) I noticed that there is going to be a meeting on January 17th concerning “a survey of software programs available for knitters and crocheters”.

SCORE!!! I’ll have to use that as a deadline for getting my knit grapher into shape. And perhaps I can get some good input from the folks at that meeting to figure out what exactly knitters and crocheters need when it comes to software. The world is full of software that’s technically refined, revolutionary in concept, and nearly useless. I’d like to start producing good stuff for my fellow fiber artists - software that somehow reduces unpleasant work or expands their capabilities and doesn’t require special hardware to run.

If anyone’s got ideas, let me know. I obviously can’t automate the process of knitting, but is there work you do with a pencil and paper that takes too much of your time? There’s probably a way to automate it.

My software wishlist? Something akin to the Sweater Wizard that people seem to love so, but Mac compatible. Knitting software designers seem to not understand that Mac is superior. ;)

Thanks, David. Looks like I’ll miss the guild meeting, but Lisa tells me that I may find some knitters hanging out at Hill Country Weavers on the weekend.

Wow, lots of Mac users in this crowd. I started off on Apple systems in college, then got a 386 with DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1 on it. Now, many years later, I’m on a lovely little iBook that does all I need and more. Mac users definitely need better knitting software. Well, I’ll see what I can do.

My fote would be for a really good Mac software, preferably Cocoa-based, that will run circles around Cochenille’s products (which as far as I know has not been updated to work natively on System X).
