You call this Winter?

I’ve been having problems with my insulin levels lately. I seem to keep taking too much in the evenings, which results in my blood sugar levels crashing very early in the morning. This in turn leads to me waking up, scarfing down some sugar to get things under control again, and then being awake from the sugar for another couple of hours.

My wakeup times for the last week include three 2:00s, one 5:00, one 3:00, and one blissful 11:00 am (New Year’s Day).

This morning when I woke up at 3:00, I went to the fridge and found that I had absolutely nothing on hand that was sufficiently sugary. Some risotto, some soup fixings, sugar-free drink mix . . . nothing that was good for staving off my hypoglycemia. So I made a run down to the local grocery store to stock up and get some frozen dinners for the rest of the week.

I made this run in a t-shirt and thin slacks. Now pay attention: 3:00 in the morning on January 2nd, and I can walk around outside in a t-shirt. Where’s the Winter? Where is the bone-chilling, frost-bringing coldness that is supposed to permeate the atmosphere for a couple months each year?

And it was humid, too. Ecch.

Now, for those of you who stop by hoping for some knitting content, I finished a hat for Corri (hot local bartender, blah blah blah) out of Lamb’s Pride Bulky. I really dig the bulky, but it’s kind of hard to tell the difference between it and the worsted. The textures and the colors are exactly the same. I need to do a swatch of each and compare them to see if I’m really getting that much of a guage difference between the two.

I need to do one more hat in this yarn by the 8th. Corri is engaged to a guy from New Hampshire, and they’re moving out there after the 8th. I offered to make them the hats because I know that Corri is prone to getting colds, and is probably going to be influenza’s new favorite home the moment she sets foot in New England. A little extra warmth couldn’t hurt. The hats are going to be almost identical, except that hers in in bright pink and his is in blue. They should make a cute couple in them.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go back to bed and see if I can drift off before the alarm rings. Sweet dreams, everyone.

I can tell you exactly where winter is. It is here in Utah! It must have liked the scenery so much here that it decided to stay over for a few weeks. If you’d like, I could try to nudge it to the southeast for you, but I don’t make any promuises.

If you could just Fed-Ex a few ounces down this way, that would be great.

For hats I find the gauge doesn’t differ much bts the Worsted and Bulky Lamb’s Pride, but for everything else…well, you know the drill. The bulky’s actually sort of nice for hats, because it just ends up as a tighter fabric with more spring, if you’re on 8s as I usually am. Plus if you use some of each, you end up with a whole thick-thin thing that’s lovely.

Would that my hands stopped hurting so I could knit! Jealous!

Raisins at 2-3 AM are my favorite. Just enough sugar to get me back to sleep. But then I’m Type 2 with high morning readings. Still, you might try it out. I like the little boxes, or a small container of applesauce.

Everytime you mention the Caper Hat I think of the Donald Westlake mysteries- the Dortmunder ones. I know those guys all have Caper Hats at the ready.

I may have to make one for my BIL; I just got him started on the books.
