Another Weekend in Kerrville
This weekend I went up to my mom and stepdad’s place in beautiful Hunt, TX, just west of Kerrville. Their computer was infected by the MyDoom virus and their printer had stopped working, so I was called to lay hands on the system.
The virus was a pain. They had Norton Antivirus installed on it, but it could not remove the virus. So I brought up a copy of AVG. Same situation – it found the virus but could not remove it. Oy vey. I searched around for a while and found a removal tool at the Symantec website which worked beautifully. But each time I ran one of these programs, it had to scan through the whole file system on their computer, which took the better part of an hour. Gaak.
While we were waiting for the antivirus programs to finish running, my mom showed me the new vest she made. It’s the Himalayan vest from Folk Vests:

Didn’t she do a great job? It’s her first vest, too!
My grandmother recently moved out of her house into a smaller place in a managed care housing facility in Kerrville. (There’s just no way to say that without it sounding depressing.) She’s still got all her marbles, but she’s pretty frail. Well, when she moved, she had less space so she gave away a lot of her stuff. And she’s got a LOT of stuff. My mom received these bronze gazelles:

The really cool thing about them is that my grandparents bought them when my grandfather was a base commander in Libya. Some of the local artists made them out of the discarded shell casings left behind by Rommell after World War II. I think I like them better as gazelles than as shell casings.
My mom also showed me a new quilt that she had displayed in a local art show. She calls it “The Dow 2000″.

Finally, after much virus-removing, printer-fixing, and a lovely dinner down the road at Camp Stuart, we returned home and found that the dogs and taken the best places in the house:
Jasmine took the sofa.

Morgan took my bed.

How odd. I was having a lot of conversation with a friend who goes to a big music festival in Kerrville. Sounds like a cool place. Hope you had a great trip. Love the dog pix.

Except for maybe the behavior of teenage boys in general (re: behavior of teenage girls in my previous comment). I just remembered what I had to fix last Christmas due to the actions of my nephew. Ah, the smell on sizzling scanner.

When I went home at Christmas, my sister asked me to de-malware and unpop-up the family computer. The downloading behavior of teenage girls with wreck a PC faster than anything.
My sisters also thought it would be a good idea to buy my dad a computer for Christmas because I would be around to set it up and show him how to use it. I seriously considered billing them for my time.
I love your mom’s quilt: beautiful and witty.

Lovely vest! Looks great on your Mom, too. I might have to get that book, myself
What a good son you are, to spend so much time with a frustrating ‘puter problem.

You look so much like your mom! Love it! And the vest looks terrific. She did a beautiful job. Hope you enjoyed your little trip, even if Morgan is a bed hog.
Any chance of seeing how the Aran currently looks?
