But what colorways does it come in?
Have you ever given someone a finished object that you were really happy with, only to suffer shock and dismay when it got torn or frayed shortly afterwards? Do you have an heirloom sweater packed away in plastic to keep it from the ravages of moths? Have you ever wished that your fashion scarf had the tensile strength needed to tow a stranger’s car out of the mud in an emergency?
Well, a group of scientists working with carbon nanotubes has the answer. Nature reports that scientists at the Unversity of Cambridge in the UK have spun yarn out of carbon nanotubes. Right now they’re coming up with a product that’s got tensile strength close to ordinary textiles. But in theory, this kind of material can be made to have the same kind of strength as oh, say, diamond.
So the next question is: what colorways will it come in?

even better - you could design the nanotubes to refract light in different ways and have color changing yarn…I’m not a knitter, but I am a nanotechnology geek!

Good point.
You could also probably do all sorts of funky things with conductivity. Ever since I got my iPod™, I’ve been lusting after one of those snowboarder jackets that has built-in controls on the sleeve. Of course, in San Antonio, I’d like something a bit lighter weight. A garment made out of nanotubes could have all sorts of funkadelic circuitry built into it.
