First Steps, again

First steps are slightly different when you don’t have a pattern to start with. When I started my first Aran sweater, I had a pattern and a gauge. I checked the pattern’s gauge with the gauge of the yarn I had on hand and it matched. So I was able to proceed according to the directions.

This time, I’ve got the yarn, but no pattern. I worked up a gauge swatch last night and found that I’ve got a horizontal gauge of about 4 ¼ stitches per inch. I’ve got a chest measurement of 43″, so the main body of the sweater will be approximately 183 stitches around. I’m going to add a couple of stitches to that to account for the cabling drawing the fabric in; so call it about 190 stitches.

Now I need to find a set of cable panels that I like that will fit into that stitch count. I also need to figure out how to size the collar and the sleeves. I’m going to knit this one top-down like I did the last one, and with no seams.

So. Gauge swatch down. Now to pick out some panels.
