Now I know what I’m doing for labor day

I’m sitting in my mom’s computer room, glancing out over the Guadalupe river, watching humming birds swoop around a feeder. It’s a lovely day in the hill country.

However, instead of being outside enjoying it, I’ve been poking at the server that my blog runs on, trying to figure out why the webserver wasn’t running. I’m not a sysadmin, but I play one in real life. For all my years of programming experience, it still takes me a long time to get my bearings in a broken *NIX system.

I have not figured out what the problem is. I obviously got the web server up and running again, but I don’t know why it stopped in the first place. And I know what was keeping it from restarting: the hostname had been set to a bad value. But I don’t know what set the hostname to that value.

Anyway, all this brings me to my task for tomorrow: I’ve got another server that I’m currently using for backups of Sweater Project. I need to move the live site to that server and use the current server as the backup site. You see, my blog is currently being served up from, which my pal Edwin runs. I’m just borrowing disk space and CPU time from him. But since I’ve got my own server, I might as well move the traffic over there.

Stay tuned. This really should not effect anything, unless something goes horribly wrong.
