Thanksgiving Debriefing
So my mom, my stepfather, my grandmother and I all bundled into the car for the very long drive to Albuquerque for Thanksgiving. A very large chunk of the family assembled there this year, and as always, my sister was the consumate hostess. Her house is right at the edge of the Sandia mountains, giving it a beautiful view of the Rio Grande valley and of the mountains themselves. Here’s a fairly representative sunset from her porch. (Those lights on the ground are Christmas lights strung on a cactus.)
There was a great deal of knitting done on this trip. On the way up, as we listened to In The Wake of Madness as an audiobook, I cast on for a Lily Chen pinwheel hat pattern. By the time we arrived in Albuquerque, I’d finished the hat for my grandmother with the exception of weaving in the last tail.
Forgive me, grandma, for that not-very-flattering picture.
The day after Thanksgiving we went down to Village Wools and Nob Hill and did some shopping. I got prizes for Bobbi at the Yarn Barn, Kaetchen and Cari. We also had a pint at this cute little pub called the Gecko. If you’re in ABQ, go check it out and admire the murals.
Then we returned home, we all busted out the goodies we’d picked up at Village Wools and set to work.
My sister and mom were both working on scarves; I was finishing up a caper hat out of some really cool yarn called Optimum.
As the night went on and we kept at our needles, my stepfather, Dan, sidled up to the assembled knitters and declared, “I give up. Gimme some needles.” So we got him some junk yarn and my sister generously donated a pair of eights from her expansive needle collection, and we proceeded to show him the knit stitch.
Bless his heart, he picked it up pretty damn fast. Not surprising, I guess; he’s been a doctor for almost 50 years and can do a one-handed tie-off of an artery. He’s got good hands.
Ain’t that just precious?
There’s a lot more, but I’m still sorting out what I want to put on the blog and what I’m going to keep confined to my private diary. I hope everyone found something to be thankful for last week.

Thank you, sweetie. I really love the pics of your family knitting. And that pic of grandma is very flattering. What a gracious face.
Glad you enjoyed yourself.

I’m not surprised your step father was able to pick up knitting being a doctor. I know a lot of physicians who knit to keep their hands in shape, especially lace knitting.

That photo of your stepdad knitting is priceless.

Just found your site! What a great job. I first came upon your picture with your ARAN sweater, very nice. I’m working on a fisherman sweater for my sister. I had never heard of a sweater done in the way you mentioned. I will definitely have to look into it.

What a beautiful sunset! To have the time to enjoy that in addition to spending time with family–it doesn’t get better than that. You are blessed!

Hi, I was wondering if you could share the tam pattern you made for your Grams, BTW I lived in Alb and another place to visit is tinkertown on the way up to Sandia Crest…it’s beautiful and the balloon fiesta is great as is the state fair.
