Daddy’s got a new pair of needles
For years, I have been coveting a pair of tortoise shell needles. It started when I got my first pair of Swallow casein needles and read that they were designed to imitate the no longer made tortoise needles. (Endangered species, don’t you know.) The protein versions are so lovely that every time I find myself in an antique store, I ask if they have any knitting needles on the off chance that I might stumble across a pair of these rare lovelies.
Well, they’re not tortoise shell, but yesterday I found a pair of bone needles at the Yarn Barn. They’re from a company called Lacis in Berkeley, CA. They are made in India, and unfortunately the packaging doesn’t say what kind of bone they’re made out of. But they’re beautiful. (This picture does not do them any kind of justice; I’ll have to experiment with my camera a little to get a really good close-up.)
(Don’t hate me, Cari.)
I grabbed the tape yarn in the picture at Michael’s on the way to a party just so I could experiment with the needles and get a feel for them. They suck for working nylon tape, but I think that they’d feel pretty good with cotton or wool.
So far I’ve got needles in casein, bamboo, cherry, aluminum, plastic and now bone. Any good materials that I’m missing?

I;ve got a couple of crochet hooks that are bone. One is plainish, the other has a lovely turned end similar to your needles. They came from my husband’s grandmother.
I’ll have to check out the Lacis site cause I’d love to try some knitting needles. I dislike crocheting so the hooks rarely get used.
And ebony is gorgeous! Must get more needles.

Maybe they’re human bone…mwuahahaha
Jamie’s idea would be a great way to combine your knitting and violin-playing interests!

I’ve been coveting a pair or two in rosewood, from the leftovers in making violins and cellos and such. Google it and see if you feel the same.
