New Fiesta Footies

I ran into my pal Lisa down at the Yarn Barn yesterday. As always, she’s on the front lines of cool fiber foolings. She had a big sack of customized flip-flops to show off:

This was the first time I’d seen this, but my mom already knew about it so perhaps I’m just behind the times. She took a bunch of cheap flip-flops and did a single crochet around the straps with novelty yarn to produce something with a little more flair. On my way home I stopped by Hobby Lobby and bought some materials, and voila!

Of course, I had to finally learn how to crochet first. I grabbed an old “Learn to Crochet” booklet out of a box of Red Heart that I got from my grandmother a year or two ago. The single crochet was pretty easy to pick up, although I didn’t get the guage or the count right on my test swatch, so it’s a little more of a warped trapezoid than a square. But I got it close enough to do the shoes.

While I was talking with Lisa, we also came up with the idea of having a stash swapping party. So, anyone in the San Antonio area, consider this advance notice: there will be a post-Fiesta Fiber Fest near the Quarry after fiesta’s wound down. There will be snacks and drinks and everyone’s invited to bring spare stash with them. After introductions are made all round, we’ll start the swapping. Come get rid of what you aren’t going to use and pick up new shiny stuff that you’re not going to use. (Let’s be honest here.)

I also found out that she’s having friends over on Thursdays for a knitting circle. I think I might start heading over there for that, especially since a woman at work has been asking me about learning to knit lately.

I’ve also finally got an update on the Bastille Cables. I finished the body and took it over to Thomas to try on. Unfortunately it was too short. As I was in the midst of steeling myself to rip it back down to the armholes, I had a better idea: instead of ripping, I picked up 2×2 rib around the bottom and I’m adding a ribbed section. Why fix it when you can cheat? Despite having completely neglected it for so long, this sweater’s still coming along really quickly. I’m very happy with it so far. Maybe if someone brings a lot of Lamb’s Pride Bulky to the swap, I’ll try it again . . .

Oh, and Pippy - so, am I making roast chicken or cereal? Gimme a heads up here. Call when you get to Dallas.
