See what I’ve been driven to?
I’ve been productive, no doubt about that. But these Knitting Olympics are driving me to extremes that I never thought I’d go to. In the drive to stay awake, I’ve had to turn to chemical enhancement.
Thing is, I’m really picky about how much sweetener I put in my coffee. You can’t be too careful about these things, you know?
Anyway, here is the first sock* after four days. I am still behind, but I’m making up for lost time.
*I say ’sock’ because I don’t know what the singular of “hose” is. “Ho?”

The rosewood needles I’m using are Colonials. Yummy.

Cute! I, too, have needed chemicals - but I limit myself to chocolate and diet Coke.
I looked it up - there is no singular for hose. The synonym seems to be either socks or stockings.
(Frankly, I like your idea - ho!)

Hmm, you better be careful. Do the knitting Olympics officials do mandatory sweetner testing?
By the way, according to dictionary.com, hose is only used in the plural. In addition to sock, stocking would be an acceptable singular. However, I also enjoyed the other aspect of the word hose I discovered. Specifically, the concept of “Cabling, especially thick Ethernet cable. This is sometimes called `bit hose’ or `hosery’ (play on `hosiery’) or `etherhose’.” This seems to encompass a couple of your interests, now can they be combined? …cabled hose knit from cabling…
PS. What’s the leather and bead thing sticking out from the sock? Row counter?

“hose” is actually singular - the plural - which has fallen into almost complete disuse - is ‘hosen’. That is why one has a “pair of hose”

Dude! Chemical enhancements will definitly help you knit faster. Nothing wrong with legal stimulants. They slip right past the olympic committee’s special testing.

One must simply go to the Germans for clarity! One stocking is “der Strumpf” or “der Kniestrumpf” (knee sock) and plural is “die Stuempfe” and add the e and umlaut to the u for the knee sock! (Old Norse and Old High German if I read the info on the site that follows. Of course,(die) Hose in German are pants, from the Old Norse and Middle High German. (I am, of course, a bit biased as it is a language that I enjoy so much!) Go to http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?search=stocking&searchmode=none for etymology on-line. A cool site!

I just want to thank you big time for the cable program. It is ingenious and generous. I even tried to donate, but Paypal was offline for the moment, not to worry, will try again. So, now on to my own olympic knitting — a ‘man’ sweater. Too much stst, decided to plunk in a big fat cable in the center to entertain myself and then serendipitously found your site on the Cast-Off podcast notes. Isn’t the web a wonder!
