New is the new new

I heard someone say “knitting is the new yoga” the other day.

Grrr.

Knitting is the new smoking. Smoking used to be chic, social, and trendy. Knitting is chic, social, and trendy.

Smoking, on the other hand, is the new sipping-medicated-sherry-at-odd-hours.

Who told you about my sherry habit?!

I wish I’d known that back when I had a desk job. I would have insisted on knitting breaks.

Knitting is the new…what?! It’s like saying “Pink is the new black.” It doesn’t make any sense. Pink is pink, black is black. Goth kids don’t wear pink and in spite of what some may believe, pink doesn’t go with everything - I give you chartreuse. Pink + chartreuse looks like vomit. Knitting is not yoga. I don’t give a flying frak if either is trendy cool and chic. I do yoga ’cause it’s better than having high blood pressure and tight muscles. I knit because I’m fidgety and easily distracted by shiny objects (and I also am fascinated with taking a raw material and turning it into a finished product, hence why I also spin).
Krimeny jeepers, people. Say what you mean to say. If you mean “Golly, a lot of people seem to be knitting these days,” then say it!

Have you seen Franklin’s ‘the new yoga’ t-shirt?

One could have the same argument for the comment about yoga, as people finally stopped thinking of it as a fad in the last couple years I’d say. I don’t think of either as trendy so much as rediscovered forms of self expression. Then you have the folks like me that just wanted to knit forever, were scared, and finally thought that if this many people can do it so can I. And neither of those activities I find very relaxing. They stick in my brain and keep me from sleeping… especially now that all I can think about is casting on for that damn yoga top when the yarn gets here. I get excited at my potential :~)

I’ll have to try the sipping medicated sherry at odd hours… could be soothing :~P

Does merlot substitute for sherry? :)

I thought yoga was the new knitting…

    ooooo….

Maybe knitting IS the new yoga…. relaxation without all the stretchy pants and possible farting from impossible poses. Maybe its the new yoga because you can eat a chili dog or nachos beforehand…. that is something to consider.

Damn, I wish smoking were still chic, social and trendy. And didn’t make me hack. I could totally knit and smoke at the same time.

  9. Ted Says:

Does this mean that at some point knitting will become the new “sipping medicated sherry at odd hours”?

  10. Anton Says:

Since when did sipping medicated sherry at odd hours go out of style?

  11. Ellen-Mary Says:

::: putting down the sherry ::: um, what do you consider “odd” hours? Just asking.
