A Rain of Queens

Last weekend was regal to the extreme. On Saturday, the Sweet Potato Queens (aka “Tammy”) did their thing up in Hunt, TX, with the customary post-parade prandials at Elaine’s Table.

Last year, someone commented that they found the SPQs to be a bunch of “foul-mouthed, drunken sluts”. I beg to differ. At the moment that photo was taken, not one of the Tammies was beyond mildly inebriated. So there.

Then on Sunday, the Alamo City Rollergirls kicked off the 2009 season with a bout against the Rollerdolls from Lubbock. The Rollerdolls had good skaters and a solid strategy and went home with the win. But that didn’t stop the ACRG Las Tejanas from sending a few of their skaters into the wall.

*whoosh*, *thud*, *oww*

Let me stress that roller derby isn’t about violence. It’s really not. It’s just that the violence looks so cool! Besides, it’s the violence that inspired much of Joan of Dark’s book, Knockdown Knits.

Sometime soon, there will be evidence of knitting progress in this space. I swear. Just bear with me.

I too aspire to be Tammy someday. I think for now I am a Wannabe Wannabe. But hey…I wouldn’t even need the foam padding!

EVERYONE needs the foam padding; actually, I’m a quilter, so some of my batting makes it into my costume.
